A Corpus-assisted Discourse Analysis of ‘The Star Online’ Columns

Languages used by journalists is often characterised by the writers’ personal point of view. This is especially true for columnists whose writings are based on their subjective opinions, usually published in a series (McNair, 2008). Consequently, it is important for columnists to create and maintain relationships with the target audience and in so doing, columnists use the power of language to communicate and interact with their readers. Not only are readers engaged when they respond to columns with their comments, other forms of feedback are now provided such as options to click the ‘like’ button or from a scale of ‘emojis’, usually at the end of the article –increasing the challenge for writers to produce a good piece of writing. According to McNair (2008, p109), this is not only entertaining for the reader, the thought “that we will disagree with a columnist whose opinions occupy the other end of the ideological spectrum from our own is often what compels us to read”. However, journalistic commentary may require critical review as we are aware of the influence and how changes in the media environment are impacting its demand and supply (Višňovský & Radošinská, 2017)

Assisted performance – a pragmatic conception of online learning

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a novel theoretical perspective on the nature of online learning. Taking a socio-cultural perspective, an argument is offered for the theorisation of peer to peer learning as a variety of ‘assisted performance’. Using this theoretical lens, a case study is then offered which uses this model to frame an analysis of the nature and occurrences of online exchanges between students, and with tutors. The case study looks at two years of online discussion in a Master’s programme in a United Kingdom university. The results suggest that looking for examples of assisted performance in the online exchanges can offer insights into the learning that can take place in online discussion and offers one way of recognising meaningful online interaction, and therefore point to ways of promoting such exchanges

Abstract. Teaching approach adopted by an Insya’ teacher affects on students’ motivation and their writingskills as well. Based on cognitive process approach proposed by Flower & Hayes (1981), this article is going to explore the teaching and learning writing at Malaysian Higher Religious Certificate programme as a process in the classroom. The main question is how do an Insya’ teacher practices writing pedagogy and the implication on the students’ motivation and their writing skills. Using qualitative single case study method, data sources were collected from classroom observations backup by video recordings, teacher interviews, focus group interviews and documents analysis. Findings revealed that the participant implemented the process-writing approach in most of the teaching and learning writing activities. Finally, the writing process approach had positive implications on student motivation and writing skilldevelopment. Keywords: writing skills; writing subject; process approach; case study; motivation

Assisted Performance in Different Task Types of Online Discussion

Screen technology enables people to read, write, obtain information and communicate through text manipulation in a wider open space. The role of screen in replacing paper handouts has an impact on human literacy (Kress, 2003) especially for education and communication purposes. In the context of online teaching and learning like e-learning, teachers are no longer viewed as the main source of knowledge. Likewise, students are no longer seen as individuals who only absorb what is taught. Through discussion, students mutually learn from each other (peer-learning). This study investigates ‘teaching’ behaviour evidenced in activities involving a group of university students using the Learning Management System (LMS) as a tool for discussion. From a socio-cultural perspective, this study will scrutinize the online teaching and learning processes and highlight the significance of the ‘mediation’ element in life, particularly in the field of lifelong learning. Socio-cultural ideas, particularly by Tharp and Gallimore’s (1988)suggest four-stage model of progression through the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)to frame our understanding of the nature of assisted performance provided by the participants in their interaction. This model provides the framework for understanding the online learning styles of university students

A weakly hard scheduling approach of partitioned scheduling on multiprocessor systems

    Get PDF
Real-time systems or tasks can be classified into three categories, based on the “seriousness” of deadline misses – hard, soft and weakly hard real-time tasks. The consequences of a deadline miss of a hard real-time task can be prohibitively expensive because all the tasks must meet their deadlines whereas soft real-time tasks tolerate “some” deadline misses. Meanwhile, in a weakly hard real-time task, the distribution of its met and missed deadlines is stated and specified precisely. As real-time application systems increasingly come to be implemented upon multiprocessor environments, thus, this study applies multiprocessor scheduling approach for verification of weakly hard real-time tasks and to guaranteeing the timing requirements of the tasks. In fact, within the multiprocessor, the task allocation problem seem even harder than in uniprocessor case; thus, in order to cater that problem, the sufficient and efficient scheduling algorithm supported by accurate schedulability analysis technique is present to provide weakly hard real-time guarantees. In this paper, a weakly hard scheduling approach has been proposed and schedulability analysis of proposed approach consists of the partitioned multiprocessor scheduling techniques with solutions for the bin-packing problem, called R-BOUND-MP-NFRNS (R-BOUND-MP with next-fit-ring noscaling) combining with the exact analysis, named hyperperiod analysis and deadline models; weakly hard constraints and µ-pattern under static priority scheduling. Then, Matlab simulation tool is used in order to validate the result of analysis. From the evaluation results, it can be proven that the proposed approach outperforms the existing approaches in terms of satisfaction of the tasks deadlines

Eco – colourants and Collage: Exploring natural colours extracted from ketapang leaves

The application of synthetic colorants in visual arts can cause substantial risks to the health and well-being of artists. The hazardous compounds in some paintings, whether they are acrylics, oils or watercolors, can cause negative health and environmental consequences. This study aimed to produce artworks with eco-colourants extracted from ketapang leaves using the boiling water extraction method. The extraction was performed at a boil for 30 minutes in distilled water keeping the liquor ratio at 1:20. The pre-mordanted, as well as meta-mordanted cotton, linen, viscose and satin silk fabrics with 5 – 10% (owf) of alum and tunjung, were dipped in the eco-colourants extract solution for 30 minutes to complete the dyeing cycle. The liquor ratio used in dyeing procedures was 1:20 and 1:40. The dyed fabrics were then evaluated visually in terms of shades obtained and the applicability toward the production of collages. The interesting aspect of this study was that the application of different mordants gave a variety of hues, even though the extracted eco-colourants come from the same source. Generally, pre-treated fabrics with tunjung produced darker shades in comparison with alum. The collected information was analysed and successfully executed to produce final collage artworks. However, the effectiveness might depend on the skills, abilities, and knowledge to produce collage artwork products using dyed fabric with extracted eco-colourants from ketapang leaves. This study gives preliminary evidence that plant-derived eco-colourants can be used in the visual arts and that they should be investigated more in the future.  Keywords: ketapang leaves, eco-colorant, extraction, mordant, collage eISSN: 2398-4287 © 2022.
